5 Ways to Elevate Your Bathroom

Bathrooms tend to be one of the most expensive rooms in your house to renovate, second only to kitchens. This ends up being the main reason that most of us tend to leave these spaces as-is. But you don't need a gut renovation to make your bathroom feel more luxurious. Sure you can go wild with marble, get yourself a beautiful tub or splurge on an oversized rain shower, but if these aren't in the scope of your budget, there are still ways to elevate your space without breaking the bank.

Colour Scheme

Whether you're starting from scratch or renovating an exisisting bathroom, your first job to tackle is to decide on your colour scheme. Consider using the 60-30-10 decorating rule if you're stuck. This concept follows the classic rule of three; in this case, three colour families are used to add balance and depth to a room. Keep in mind, this isn't a strick formula but more of a guideline:

60% is the main colour for your room. The idea is that the 60% colour anchors the space and serves as a backdrop for what comes next.

30% is the secondary colour. You'll be using half as much of this colour as your main colour. Think feature walls, flooring or a painted vanity.

10% is your accent colour. This can be brought in via decor or even your fittings.

An example of the 60-30-10 rule in the bathroom may look like: 60% white, 30% black and 10% gold.

Let there be light

An often overlooked, but easy way to bring a bit of 'wow' to your bathroom is to opt for interesting light fixtures. Think oversized sconces, chandeliers and an upgrade to your run of the mill vanity lighting.  Select lighting fixtures that have been designed to handle any moisture, humidity or dampness, and if you don't know your way around wiring, consult a professional electrician to install the fittings for you.

Upgrade your fittings

Our fittings are the most used part of our bathrooms, why not make them a centrepiece? Upgrading your taps, shower head, towel rack and even your toilet roll holder, can give a whole new feel to the space. Both brass and matte black fixtures are at the top of our list at the moment, but either will give your bathroom that elevated feel you're after.

When selecting new fittings, think about how they work with the rest of your bathroom features like the tiles and colour scheme. Silver tapware reflects the light nicely and can add a contemporary, high-end finish, while matte black and brass are two other popular choices. If you’re moving fittings, make sure your towel rails and toilet roll holders are conveniently positioned. Towels should be within reach as you step out of the shower and the toilet roll holder should be positioned so you can comfortably reach it when sitting down.

Tile features

Bathroom tiles are one of those beautiful and drool-worthy elements that are versatile and have the power to transform any bathroom into a stunning sanctuary. Bathroom floor tiles and wall tiles have a major impact on the overall look and feel of the space and so it’s important to choose wisely. While there are a lot of tile trends floating around, make sure you choose a design that you think will outlast your taste. Keep in mind that natural stone and concrete tiles are harder to maintain whereas porcelain and ceramic bathroom tiles are low maintenance.

It's all in the details

Renters, this one's for you. If you're looking for the most effortless ways to elevate your space, start with the small details. Upgrading your mirror, storage, towels and even your bathmat, will give your bathroom that luxurious feel without having to renovate.

Choosing a mirror to suit your space can be a bit tricky. Not only size, but style, shape and the material it’s made of all weigh in on your decision-making. It is important to consider your priorities in this regard and work within the decorating scheme for the whole bathroom. A contemporary space calls for a sleek finish with perhaps a larger format, or custom fitted expanse of mirror. A tiny bathroom can benefit from an oversized mirror to extend the space visually.

When it comes to creating a luxury feel in your bathroom, the number one tip you'll come across is to declutter. Now this doesn't mean that you can't can anything out on your bench tops. While you'll want to find a hidden home for your bulkier items, consider getting some glass containers to house your everyday necessities - think cotton pads and ear buds.

Lastly, splurge on some oversized, fluffy towels and find a nice way to display them (large hooks, shelves, or a well-organised towel rack). If it's in the budget, you may even want to considering getting a heated towel rack for those chilly mornings. You'll thank us later.
