How to Paint a Concrete Patio in Australia: Step-by-Step Guide with Haymes Quickpave

Transforming a bare concrete patio into a modern outdoor entertaining area is easier than you might think. In our latest video, we show you exactly how to prepare and paint concrete using Haymes Quickpave — and this step-by-step guide expands on the process so you can achieve a long-lasting, professional finish at home.

Step 1: Prepare Your Concrete Patio Properly

The key to successful concrete painting is preparation. Start by thoroughly sweeping the surface to remove all dirt and dust. A simple adhesive tape test will confirm whether your patio is ready for coating — press tape firmly onto the concrete and peel it off. If dust or debris sticks to the tape, further cleaning is required.

For smooth or previously uncoated concrete, etching is essential. Mix hydrochloric acid at a ratio of three parts water to one part acid (always add acid to water, never water to acid). Apply evenly, scrub in with a stiff broom, allow it to react for 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly — ideally with a high-pressure cleaner. This process roughens the surface to improve paint adhesion. Always wear appropriate safety gear.

Allow the surface to dry completely before moving to the next step.

Step 2: Apply the First Coat

Haymes Quickpave covers approximately 12 square metres per litre. For the first coat, thin the product by 20% with clean water to ensure proper penetration into the concrete.

Work in sections no larger than 3m x 3m. Cut in edges with a brush, then roll using a 12mm nap roller suited to smooth or semi-smooth concrete. Avoid painting in direct sunlight and ensure no rain is forecast within 24 hours.

Step 3: Recoat and Finish

Quickpave is touch dry in around 30 minutes and can be recoated after two hours. Apply subsequent coats unthinned in the same manner. The surface can handle light foot traffic after two hours, but avoid heavy or abrasive use for seven days.

With the right preparation and application, your concrete patio can be refreshed in a single afternoon — ready for entertaining, relaxing, and enjoying the outdoors.
