Transform Your Timber Deck with Haymes Timber Oil Stain
A timber deck is one of the hardest-working features of your home. Sun, rain and foot traffic can quickly take their toll, but with the right preparation and Haymes timber oil stain, available from PaintRight, you can restore and protect your deck while enhancing the natural beauty of the timber.
Before you start
If your deck is new or freshly sanded, allow it to weather for 6–8 weeks before staining. This allows the timber to open up and ensures better penetration and performance of the coating.

What you’ll need
Available from your local PaintRight or Haymes Paint store:
- Haymes Easy Care / Simply Woodcare Wood Cleaner
- Stiff-bristle broom
- Bucket
- Pressure washer
- Brush and tray
- Paint stirrer
- Decking applicator
- 75mm synthetic brush
- Safety equipment
- Haymes Dexpress Timber Oil Stain

Step 1: Clean the deck
Mix 4 parts water to 1 part wood cleaner. Scrub the mixture thoroughly into the timber using a stiff-bristle broom, paying extra attention to high-traffic or weathered areas.
Rinse the deck well using a pressure washer, ensuring all residue is removed. Allow the surface to dry completely before moving on.

Step 2: Apply the timber oil stain
Once dry, stir Haymes Dexpress Timber Oil Stain thoroughly before use.
Apply the stain liberally using a decking applicator or brush. If brushing, work on 2–3 boards at a time, coating the entire length of each board in one continuous pass. This helps prevent lap marks and ensures an even finish.
Maintain a wet edge throughout application and avoid overlapping areas that have already started to dry.
Use a 75mm synthetic brush to cut in edges and reach tight areas.

Step 3: Second coat
Once the first coat is dry, apply a second coat in the same manner to enhance colour depth and durability.
